Corno Medale is one of the most famous peaks in Lecco. It took me about 1 hour and thirty minutes to reach the peak. It's not an easy trail, it's actually quite challenging. I suggest going there SOLO only to the ones who are very confident in outdoor environments. Don't be afraid though! If you are a beginner, get a guide. Or even better, meet a local. Many in Lecco will be happy to bring you there. The mountains are the pride of this little community.
My best tip is to go to an "alimentari" in the morning before you begin the hike. There are plenty in Lecco. They are small grocery stores full of Italian goods. Ask the owner to make a "rosetta with prosciutto cotto and taleggio" which is basically a panini with ham and local aged cheese. Or if you want to be healthier, try the "bresaola with parmesan". Italian food tastes even better after a hike. Trust me, you will love having a picnic up there. It will be the best reward!
Once you have all the above-mentioned things, you are ready to reach the peak!
The 52 segment of this hike is actually quite smooth. It's similar to a mule track. Keep hiking on this track and it will take you to San Martino's chapel and the peak. But I will bring you there another time. Now is the time to get into the trail named 56a.
The beginning of the trail is quite steep and it can be very slippery, so be careful. I actually hit the ground on my way back. I had a big bruise on my ass and all my friends made fun of me. I was sore for almost a week and I couldn't sit properly, a pain in the ass, literally!
Is April and spring have just begun, everything is green and the flowers are blooming everywhere. I spotted daisies, cowslips, cyclamens and many other colorful ones. The smell of the brush in the first part of the trail is very intense. The humidity of the ground mixed with the smell of the flowers and the grass. It is giving life to an intense and fresh fragrance of nature.
It's a challenging trek because the environment changes quite often. The trail starts quite narrow and goes deep into the forest. After about a km the hike gets harder and the path is full of rocks and steps, then it opens up and follows the side of the mountain. In this part of the path, I crossed little valleys and gorges. Some sections are on exposed cliffs and are perfect to enjoy the wonderful landscapes.
If you are afraid of heights, hiking Corno Medale might not be for you. Fortunately, I am not afraid of being heights, Honestly, I loved the feeling of being there, a little excited, full of adrenaline and I couldn't wait to reach the top.
The last part of the trail is quite fun and it made me feel as if I was are rock climbing because the path turns into stone slabs. It's super cool! Once I saw the cross, I knew I arrived, FINALLY!
Here I am at 1080 meters above sea level with an elevation gain of 800 meters.
Looking at the amazing landscapes of Lake Como, Lecco city, Valsassina and Brianza's lakes.
But, the best is yet to come. With a little more effort the most amazing spot is just there, in few more meters...
the helicopter platform on the top of Monte Medale.
Looking at the mountains behind me I wish I had had more time to keep hiking, but it was almost sunset and I had to go back.
Behind me, Monte Coltignone 1479 meters above sea level. From the platform, there is a 360 degrees view. It's breathtaking.Enjoy the cool breeze and connect yourself with nature.
